Why High Quality Dog Beds Are Important To Their Health

Why High-Quality Beds Are Important to Your Dog’s Health

It’s a little jarring for style-conscious dog lovers to walk into a perfectly designed space, and there in the corner is a ratty, garage sale-reject dog “bed” rumpled and looking completely out of place, a bit like the moth-eaten recliner on TV’s Frasier.  It begs the question, “Is it really a matter of comfort for your dog, or cost for you?”

Your Dog’s Bed is Furniture

Dogs may not be able to appreciate the aesthetic appeal of a beautiful bed, but they can certainly feel the difference.  Here are a few reasons why cheaply made beds could be hazardous to your canine’s health:

·       Low grade materials of unknown origin.  Many dog beds are made with fill that will lump up and provide little support for your dog’s body, joints, and comfort.

·       Potential allergens.  Cheap beds may have traces of chemicals that can irritate people or pets, causing distress and an inability to sleep.

·       Shoddy workmanship.  Loose threads, sharp edges, and escaping fill can cause injury or choking, especially if your dog chews.

While some people might think dogs are happy with a pile of old blankets, ask yourself – would you find this acceptable?  It’s a known fact that dogs age much more quickly than their humans.  Why wouldn’t you want to promote a deep and healthful sleep for your beloved best friend, which will help extend their life?

Dogs Sleep More Than People Do

Most dogs average 12 hours of sleep a day, sometimes more.  The exact amount will vary by breed, age, size, and lifestyle.  Dogs that are crated during the day will usually spend most of it sleeping.  That being said, it’s logical to assume that providing the best quality bed will encourage the best quality sleep.  Dogs do engage in REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) just as humans do.  Sleep is vital to rejuvenation, immune system functions, and to rest the digestive tract.  By ensuring proper sleep, you are helping to reduce potential health issues down the road.

Dog Bed Design Shouldn’t Resemble a Jungle Gym

Some dog beds that are popular feature very rudimentary designs and look better suited for a child’s playground than in your house.  Finding a gorgeous dog bed that blends with your home’s style need not be hard; you just have to know where to look.

How to Spot a High-Quality Dog Bed

Dog beds that are made to last will have some things in common.  These qualities are not hard to find, and will be apparent if you know what to look for:

·       Tough, dog-friendly fabric.  A dog bed worth the price will be soil proof, slobber proof, mildew-resistant, and washable.

·       Fill that isn’t frustrating.  Made with hypo-allergenic, comfortable fill that retains its shape.

·       Beautiful colors and patterns.  Why should discerning pet parents settle for ugly?  On-trend colors that reflect your sophisticated taste should be obvious.

·       Made to last.  A bed that Fido won’t sleep in isn’t much of a bargain.  Luxury dog beds will last years, some for the life of your pet.  Don’t have your furbaby settle for less.

Investing in a high-quality dog bed will not only procure a soft place for your best friend to sleep peacefully, it also allows you to not feel the urge to scurry it away upon company arriving.  Most importantly, it promotes your dog’s ideal health through the best quality sleep.

Our dogs, Brody and Saban love to sleep in the bed with us, but they still have their own extra large, extra comfy, durable dog beds next to ours, for those times when they get hot in the bed or just want to stretch out.  They also want to be right by our side during the day when we work in our offices at home and so they both have their own beds in our offices as well.  Having them lay on the floor all day is not an option for us.  Our dogs love comfort so it is a must that we do this for them!

I hope this post helps and if you still need more help figuring out what type of bed is right for you, check out my post here

Does your dog have a favorite spot that they love to nest in every day? Tell us about it!  We love to hear from you.
